About the area

Once a powerhouse of heavy industry, °¬˛ćAƬ today is modern, green and economically ambitious. The region has benefited from enormous regeneration investment in recent years and, with more to look forward to, is enjoying a period of exciting transformation.

°¬˛ćAƬ, situated within the South Wales Valleys and flanked by the Brecon Beacons, is a place of heritage and dramatic change with its eyes firmly on the future. It is 20 miles north of Newport and 30 miles north east of Cardiff, and lies in the north-western corner of Gwent at the head of the Sirhowy, Ebbw and Clydach Valleys.  °¬˛ćAƬ is an area of contrasting landscapes dominated by rugged mountains looming peacefully over the valley communities.

The County Borough covers an area of approximately 10,900 hectares with an estimated population of 66,900 (as at 2021) with most of the population concentrated in the towns of Abertillery, Brynmawr, Ebbw Vale, Tredegar, Nantyglo and Blaina.  °¬˛ćAƬ has always had a strong sense of community and is proud of its industrial and social history.
