Pupils and teachers of Ysgol Gymraeg Tredegar have paid a visit to the site of their new school to see the progress that is being made. They saw the steel frame, the first significant structure on site, during a recent visit to site hosted by the contractors ISG Ltd
Ysgol Gymraeg Tredegar is currently in temporary accommodation at Bedwellty House, until their brand-new building on Chartist Way is ready in Spring 2025. The 210-place seedling school, inclusive of childcare provision, is part of the Council’s ongoing commitment to increasing Welsh education opportunities in the county borough. The school and onsite childcare facility is fully funded by the Welsh Government.
24 children are already signed up for the school for September, with this expected to increase.
Ysgol Gymraeg Tredegar is federated with the county borough’s other Welsh primary school, Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Helyg, and shares the same Governing Body and Headteacher.
The school will allow the Council to meet increased demand for Welsh-medium childcare and education places in the area. The school build will also incorporate a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA), a forest play area, a growing orchard, and wild-flower meadows. The school will also be climate conscious with solar panels and electric vehicle charging points.
A play area on the site will also be relocated on the same site and be furnished with new play equipment. Work is almost complete on this.
Headteacher Ann Toghill says:
“It has been very exciting to visit the site and the Nursery and Reception class children had a warm welcome from ISG staff. They loved wearing their hard hats and jumping in muddy puddles as well as seeing the diggers which are building their new school. Ysgol Gymraeg Tredegar staff measured children’s heights and marked them on the steel and children wrote their names so that they will forever be a part of the building. Their favourite part of the visit was sitting in a digger, and they can’t wait to visit again as the build progresses.â€
Councillor Sue Edmunds, the Council’s Executive Member for People & Education says:
“We want to offer parents and carers more choice and opportunities when it comes to educating their children and help to grow the Welsh language here in the county borough. I know everyone is really excited to move to the new building next year, which will be a first-class modern learning environment for our pupils.
“It’s never too late to think about your child accessing Welsh education, and there’s plenty of information available on the Schools & Learning section of our Council website.â€
