New developments in the support for newly qualified Social Workers

The launch took place on Friday, 21st October at the Newbridge Memo where an overview of the support programme was presented. The event was also opened by Ian Thomas from the Care Council for Wales.

The support programme aims to:

  • Ensure a smooth transition from being a student to being a confident Social Worker
  • Increase retention and satisfaction for newly qualified Social Workers
  • Ensure citizens are receiving high quality services
  • Develop a support network for newly qualified Social Workers
  • Meet the expectations of  the Care Council for Wales

The development of the programme was supported by consultation with citizens, research of other support programmes and publications and listening to the feedback received from newly qualified Social Workers.

The support programme will also enable newly qualified Social Workers to prepare for their future development. As all Social Workers who qualify after April 2016 will be require by the Care Council for Wales to complete the Consolidation Programme.

Cllr Robin Woodyatt, Caerphilly Cabinet Member for Social Services said:

“I am delighted that the First Three Years in Practice – Social Worker Support Programme is being launched as this will provide a valuable mentoring service for newly qualified Social Workers. As well as introducing these Social Workers to professional social work, the support programme will allow them to grow both in confidence and competence. I look forward to seeing how the support programme develops in the future.”

Cllr Graham Bartlett, °¬˛ćAƬ Council’s Executive Member for Social Services said:

“This is such a positive initiative for all Student Social Workers. Hopefully the programme will be seen as a real asset to people who may receive care from these social care professionals in the future.  I have no doubt that the confidence and support that will be gained throughout the programme will be carried over into the professional care setting and wish the programme the very best of success.”
