Jordan - from Apprentice to Finance Award winner and full-time employment

Jordan Harley made a decision back in 2018 to join an Apprenticeship programme with Aspire °¬²æAƬ and since then has never looked back. At that time Jordan had completed a Foundation degree and was studying a Business degree at University but he realised the benefits of gaining ‘hands on’ work experience and decided to start an apprenticeship, which offered a way to learn and earn a living at the same time.

Whilst working and studying as an Apprentice at °¬²æAƬ and Caerphilly Workforce Development it became increasingly clear to Jordan that finance was an area that he wished to pursue. Upon completing his ILM qualification and degree he achieved the award for Apprentice of the Year. Shortly after Aspire °¬²æAƬ offered a further opportunity to begin a second Apprenticeship which linked directly with his career ambitions. Jordan soon immersed himself in this new role as an Accountancy Trainee in the Accounts Payable Section of °¬²æAƬ County Borough Council. It was in this position that he was able to learn quickly from experienced staff and finance professionals.

Jordan commented:
“Anyone interested in doing an Apprenticeship I would say - go for it! It’s provided me with not only the hands on experience that every employer wants to see on a candidate’s CV, but also the knowledge and skills to thrive in any environment.â€

Upon completing his Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) Level 3 qualification, with an average of 94%, Aspire entered Jordan in the Finance Awards Wales 2021 in the Accounts Technician category. Not only did he reach the finals but went on to win this prestigious award.

Jordan was successful in gaining a secondment opportunity within the Finance Department, and with such a glittering career to date it was only a matter of time before he was offered the role of Finance Officer at °¬²æAƬ CBC, after his secondment ends in in April 2022. It is a position that would require all the skills and experience that Jordan has learned over the years as an Apprentice. His duties will include budget monitoring for capital grant projects for the authority which has been funded by Welsh Government, VAT monitoring and daily cash and treasury management tasks

This is an excellent example of how an Apprenticeship can offer a solid pathway into the working environment, providing the necessary experience and qualifications for a full-time career in a rewarding role that interests the individual. Congratulations Jordan and all the very best for the future.
