The Data Protection Act 1998 regulates the processing of information relating to individuals. This includes the obtaining, holding, use or disclosure of such information.
The act is enforced by the Information Commissioner’s Office and °¬˛ćAƬ County Borough Council is registered with the Information Commissioner as a Data Controller.
The Data Protection Act requires anyone who handles personal information to comply with a number of important principles. It also gives individuals rights over their personal information.

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
The Data Protection Act 1998 is going to be replaced by the Data Protection Act 2018 reflecting new European legislation called the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This will become effective on 25th May 2018.
The new law will extend the rights of individuals and require organisations holding personal data to comply with a new stricter set of rules.
